Return to: Majors & Minors
The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics by Contract is for students who wish to design their own program of study,.
Students who complete the Mathematics major are able to:
- Analyze given information and utilize computational skills, algorithms, and theoretical knowledge to solve problems;
- Communicate mathematics clearly and effectively: read with understanding and interpret, express ideas orally and in writing;
- Choose and employ current technologies to explore a phenomenon, model a problem, analyze data, and draw conclusions;
- Develop and test conjectures, and read, construct, critique, and present rigorous mathematical proofs.
Upon successfully completing the major, graduates will be well equipped to secure desired employment in education, pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science, as well as to pursue graduate studies in mathematics or math-related programs of study.
---
Students must complete a contract designed and signed by the student and a Mathematics faculty sponsor and approved by the Mathematics Department chair. The written contract will state how the student is to complete a minimum of 48 credits, to be distributed as follows:
- At least 30 credits in mathematics, with at least 12 of those credits at the 3000 level or higher;
- At least 18 credits in a second discipline.
Normally the contract is approved by the time the student has reached the fifth semester or 75 credits.
NOTE: Those students wishing to have education as the second discipline should opt for BA.MAT.SED OR BA.MAT.EED since all Education Department requirements for Elementary Education and Secondary Education must be satisfied for a teaching degree.
