BS Health Science

 

The mission of the Health Science Program at Castleton University is to provide a comprehensive and progressive academic experience that will prepare students for a wide range of career paths in health-related fields, such as athletic training, chiropractic medicine, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

 

The Health Science Program will prepare students to:

  1. Locate, comprehend, and evaluate information related to human biology, health, and medicine.
  2. Think critically and effectively apply content knowledge to real world situations and tasks.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to adhere to laboratory protocols and collect data using the scientific method.
  4. Demonstrate professionally responsible behavior.
  5. Utilize effective oral and written communication skills.
  6. Secure employment in a health profession, related field, or gain admission to a graduate program of study.

 

Pre-Athletic Training:

Students who select the Pre-AT concentration are preparing to apply to the 2- Year Master of Athletic Training program at Castleton.  Specifically, the Health Science/Pre-AT degree is a 3-year accelerated program that prepares students to enter our 2-year CAATE accredited Master of Athletic Training (MAT) Program.  Students must complete the Health Science core and the general education program in three years in order to take advantage of the 3+2 Bachelor of Science in Heath Science + Master of Athletic Training option.  However, students may elect to complete the 4-year Health Science degree before applying to the MAT program (4+2).  Enrollment in the MAT program is limited and admission is selective.  Please take note of the specific admissions requirements on the MAT webpage

 

Pre-Health Professions:

Students who select the Pre-Health Professions concentration are preparing to apply to professional programs in the health care field, including chiropractic medicine, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

General Health Science:

Student who select the general health science path will be prepared for a wide range of career paths in health-related fields or graduate programs.

 

Compete the following courses as part of the Health Science Core Curriculum (49-51 credits)  

 

* AHS 5025 Athletic Training Clinical I will substitute for AHS 2810 Internship in Health Science for students accepted into the MAT program.

 

AND COMPLETE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TRACKS

 

Pre-Athletic Training Track (14 credits)

 

Pre-Professional Track (15 credits)

 

General Health Science Track (14 credits)

Pharmacy Degree (CU/ACPHS 3+4)


This major participates in the 3+4 program with Albany School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, in which highly-focused students can earn a Bachelor's degree in just three years at CU and a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) in four years at ACPHS.
